There is no secret that summer in the Bay Area is essentially a haven, with incredible beaches and amazing spots to get a bite or a drink. It also can get unbearably toasty. Not ideal when you’re looking to have maternity photos taken with you feeling sweaty and hot. I.E. making you feel even less sexy than you may already feel. But book your session in an ac/heat-controlled studio and you’ve completely changed the situation. And this is exactly what expecting parents Andrea and Ruben did this last summer with their modern and sexy maternity session.
While the temps crawled higher and the long summer days felt endless, I met up with Andrea and Ruben at my studio to document this incredibly special time in their life as they got ready to welcome their first child.
The funny thing about social media is that it connects you with amazing people in the most peculiar ways. I met Andrea and Ruben because they follow Sydel Curry, yes, THAT Sydel Curry, whom I have photographed several times, and from the get-go, it felt like a perfect match. The whole session felt more like good friends hanging out versus feeling like a Sears photo studio session, which is my ultimate goal when documenting couples, especially when it’s in a studio.
Something I always recommend to my clients, especially when it’s in the studio, is for them to book either earlier in the day or in the evening, that way they can go out to eat and make a date of it. If you are already dressed up and feeling all of the feelings towards your special person because you’ve just spent the last hour or so kissing and snuggling, why not make a date night out of it?
I absolutely loved their outfits, which were so simple yet showed off who they are as individuals (and showed off Andrea’s bump beautifully!) Which, I kept telling her she looked like Beyonce because that mama was just so stunning and you could tell that she was absolutely feeling it. There was this sexiness to their session that still felt so modern and classic.
When it comes to picking outfits, sometimes it is easy to get caught up in feeling like you need to go out and buy expensive outfits, which is 100% okay. But I’ve seen time and time again couples who pick simple outfits or outfits from their closets coming in and being more comfortable during their session. Ultimately, when it comes to picking out an outfit for your session, pick something that still looks and feels like you, even if it’s a little more elevated than your everyday outfit. Pick something that makes you feel 100%.
The love between these two was so obvious throughout this whole session as they snuggled and smiled at one another. It was also so clear how excited they were for this new adventure they were on together and it was such a joy to be able to witness and document. We kept things simple and neutral and really relaxed. Meaning very little posing and more focus on the love between Andrea and Ruben. We had a blast laughing and joking together and nothing felt awkward or forced. It was just a fun time documenting their love and this new phase of their lives, and it was such a joy to witness and be a part of.
